Let's see, okay it could be 1-161

This was such heartache to watch -- and it took me this long to post it. I thought they could possibly win, I really did.

Cubs bullpen spoils strong showing from starter Silva

It's like a freakin' roller coaster!!!

''Remember what I said in spring training,'' Piniella said. ''Everything was fine when we were in the afternoon in single-deck stadiums. And all of a sudden [in big-league stadiums] it gets a little different. We had to see. Well, we haven't seen what we'd like to see -- put it that way.''

So, does that mean these pitchers are not Major League ready? If so, why the heck are they playing on a Major League team? Put someone in there that can actually throw a strike, get a batter out. It's not exactly rock science!!

But on this night, it was just one more thing the Cubs wasted, along with several scoring chances that turned into 13 men left on base.

Yeah, if they could have scored just a fraction of those left on base, the game would have been well in hand and there wouldn't have been such an emphasis on the bullpen. Although, I cannot believe that Caridad pitched the way he did. He wasn't even throwing strikes. And to top it all off, he gives up a grand slam to Stubbs, who's probably never hit one before.

Caridad blamed the umpire. ''I threw strikes, and he didn't call strikes. I don't know why,'' Caridad said, adding he felt forced to come in to Stubbs with the pitch Stubbs hit over the center field wall.

Regardless, it left the Cubs looking at a lot of waste in this first week of the season.

Newsflash, Caridad!! If you throw strikes, the umpire will call strikes. Obviously, they weren't strikes. And when you're a young pitcher starting out in the Majors, you have to establish yourself first and show you can throw strikes. Take responsibility for your failure, Caridad.

Well, it was an equal opportunity situation when it came to leaving guys on base in scoring position for the Cubs with 2 out. It was a classic case of not hitting when the iron was hot, as the saying goes. And with the bullpen failure, it just points out glaringly the weaknesses in this ballclub. I hope they survive the weekend.
